May 2013 Update

A Convention and an Education

The month of June is shaping up to be a busy one for CAL. On June 5th, board members as well as myself will be in attendance at the Iglesia Evangelica Luterana Confessional convention in Puebla, Mexico. We will be expressing our Christian fellowship as well as discussing some of the crucial building blocks needed to move the school forward. I will remain in Puebla at the Puebla Institute of Spanish for language training throughout the remainder of the month. We humbly request your prayers for our safe travels and a fruitful meeting.

Growing Support

In late April, I was privileged to share the message of CAL at Risen Savior’s (MIlwaukee) chapel service. I was also honored to do the same at the Men’s Breakfast Group (Faith – Antioch, IL) as well as the Shoreland Circuit Convention of Pastors (Kenosha, WI). I am thankful to all of these groups for allowing me the opportunity!

I look forward to sharing an update with all of you from Puebla next month! Until then, God’s richest blessings to you and yours!

March 2013 Update

Brothers and sisters are continuing to offer prayers and support for the colegio.  Most recently, I was privileged to attend the Men’s Bible Study Breakfast group at Faith (Antioch, IL).  These men were excited to hear about what the Lord is doing with the school.  In February I also sat down with President Zarling at MLC to discuss how we might move forward with future staffing.  His words of advice and encouragement were uplifting and truly a blessing.  I also met with Professor Bases and Professor Hunter.  These meetings were invaluable as we discussed a strategic approach to utilizing students of Spanish and Multicultural Studies for future partnership.

Back in January the board for the colegio entered into discussions with the CEF for possible funding in the future.  A working relationship with the BWM and the CEF has since begun.  It is my prayer that the Lord will pave the way for our goal of bringing Gospel-centered education to the children of Mexico.  I humbly ask that you join me in that prayer.

February 2013 Update

leon1Reformation In Mexico

God’s people are becoming increasingly excited about the possibility of a “reformation” in Mexico through our mission work there.  The Gospel work of the IELC (Iglesia Evangelica Luterana Confesional), WELS missionaries and the colegio are seen as a useful team in spreading the Lamb’s love and truth among children and families of Mexico.  Both MLC and WLC have expressed interest in partnering with us in the future as a feeder into their colleges and worker training programs.  Our plan for a truly bilingual education will equip future students with a working knowledge of English.  Our Gospel-centered curriculum will, by the Spirit’s power, fill the ranks of Christendom and equip such believers for outreach and proclamation.  By God’s amazing grace, we will sow the seeds that will produce the gifts of much-needed evangelism in years to come.  He alone is praised.

Steady Progress

The Lord continues to move the hearts of His people to support this Gospel outreach.  Most recently, He has blessed us with yet another singular gift of $50,000.  He has also opened many doors for us with congregations such as Immanuel (Waukegan, IL), St. Paul (Round Lake, IL), Crossroads (Chicago, IL) as well as the Kenosha circuit of WELS churches.  Many of His redeemed people continue to consider this effort as an option for their prayers and support.  While it is the Lord’s “purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21), we are becoming increasingly convinced that this endeavor is moving steadily forward.  We can only thank our saving God that He has opened the doors for us to pursue this work in His ripe fields.

January 2013 Update

Our Lord continues to bless the school through the thankful responses of His people. Word is spreading quickly and Christians everywhere are realizing that the colegio is an ideal opportunity to carry out our Savior’s Great Commission.

At the end of last year, we were blessed with a $50,000 grant from the Antioch Foundation. Congregations in La Crescent, Minnesota and Antioch, Illinois are also responding to the endeavor. Contacts are being made and interest is growing around the country. A group of committee members have also zeroed in on a land site in an ideal part of the city.

God alone is praised as we head into this new year and I look forward to hearing from you! Pray, praise and give thanks!

December 2012 Update

Currently, the León School Project is in a vigorous infancy stage.  We have retained the services of a Mexican attorney named Blanca Jaime (see below).  She is working hard in León to secure our status in the local chamber of commerce.  She is also assisting the superintendent in researching necessary information pertaining to owning property as well as operating a school.

We have also hired the school’s superintendent.  The committee, all of whom are taxed with other duties and vocations in life, felt it was necessary to hire a WELS member with an educational background to “take the ball” in the endeavor.  The search committee decided on Joe Christina, a member of Heritage in Lindenhurst, Illinois (see below).

In the meantime, the superintendent has been developing a viable school plan which will allow for our school to grow in grade levels steadily.  He has also been heavily involved in soliciting funds and spreading awareness among other WELS Lutherans.  In early October 2012, the superintendent joined committee members and a WELS member architect on a site selection excursion to León.  We were blessed and are convinced, God-willing, that we have located an ideal location for the school as well as viable contingency options.  Everyone involved in the project is excited about this opportunity to fulfill our Savior’s Great Commission!  We pray that you will join in our joyful endeavor.

Joe Christina

Joe is a resident of Lindenhurst, Illinois and is a member of Heritage Lutheran Church.  A graduate of MLC and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, he is a second career teacher who received his Illinois type-03 certification via Dominican University.  His teaching career has been in the primary grade levels.  He is married to Michele, a registered nurse who cares for patients in a cardiac hospital setting.  The Lord has blessed them with four children: Gloria, Brynne, Payton and Adrian.  The family was involved in the decision process and look collectively forward to relocating to León, according to God’s will, in the distant future.

The Next Step For Our School

At the beginning of this year, Blanca (pictured here), a member of El Redentor (Redeemer) in Torreon, Mexico, moved to the city of Leon.

Plans are underway to build a Lutheran school in Leon. Blanca is playing a key role in getting the ball rolling for this project. She’s currently overseeing some of the inner workings of getting a school up and going in Mexico.

As an experienced lawyer, Blanca has the legal expertise needed to follow the regulations and paperwork the government requires to open a school. Laying out the groundwork for this is no small task. “It’s first necessary to follow the federal laws concerning education,” she says. “Then each state adds its own set of laws too.”

While there are other schools in Leon, this one will be different in a significant way. “We’ll teach Lutheran values,” explains Blanca. “We want to carry out evangelism efforts through education.”

Details for the project are still being investigated and developed, but Blanca’s already put in a good amount of legwork. She’s in the process of scouting out land options, developing plans, and offering suggestions to the others involved in the project. “I’m happy and feel blessed to be able to serve God in this way,” she says.

Blanca will take her initial investigative work to a meeting in August, where others involved in the project will help make decisions regarding what steps to take next.

Later this summer we’ll provide an update on the school project – thanks for your work, Blanca, and stay tuned for more information on the school!
